Synchronization mechanism of sharp edges in rings of Saturn
We propose a new mechanism which explains the existence of enormously sharp edges in the rings of Saturn. This mechanism is based on the synchronization phenomenon due to which the epicycle rotational phases of particles in the ring, under certain conditions, become synchronized with the phase of external satellite, e.g. with the phase of Mimas in the case of the outer B ring edge. This synchro...
متن کاملDynamics of the Sharp Edges of Broad Planetary Rings
The following describes a model of a broad planetary ring whose sharp edge is confined by a satellite’s m Lindblad resonance (LR). This model uses the streamline formalism of Borderies et al. (1982, 1985) to calculate the ring’s internal forces, namely, ring gravity, pressure, and viscosity. The model also allows for the possibility of a drag force that can affect small ring particles directly,...
متن کاملφ φ φ φ φ φ k From Max - SAT to Min - UNSAT : Insights and Applications
This report describes a strong connection between maximum satisfiability and minimally-unsatisfiable subfor-mulas of any constraint system, as well as techniques for exploiting it. Focusing on CNF formulas, we explore this relationship and present novel algorithms for extracting minimally-unsatisfiable subformulas, including one that finds all such subformulas. We present experimental results s...

We show how the nearly bi-maximal mixing scenario comes out naturally from gauged SO(3) F flavor symmetry via spontaneous symmetry breaking. An interesting relation between the neutrino mass-squared differences and the mixing angle, i.e., ∆m 2 µe /∆m 2 τ µ ≃ 2|U e3 | 2 is obtained. The smallness of the ratio (or |U e3 |) can also naturally be understood from an approximate permutation symmetry....
متن کاملOn Arthur’s Φ-function
Write Θ for the stable character associated to a finite dimensional representation E of a connected real reductive group G. Let M be the centralizer of a maximal torus T , and denote by ΦM (γ,Θ ) Arthur’s extension of |D M (γ)| 1 2Θ(γ) to T (R). In this paper we give a simple explicit expression for ΦM (γ,Θ ), when γ is elliptic in G.
